Give new life to your cabinets with cabinet refinishing. Create new style and flair while saving money at the same time. It is quite expensive to replace cabinets, but you can change the look of your current cabinets and go easy on your wallet by simply giving them a little "face-lift". With a little skill and work, you can transform your old kitchen or bathroom into a lovely work of art. Depending on the condition of your cabinets, the price to refinish them may be very inexpensive.

You can apply various techniques in the painting process to decorate and "jazz-up" and cabinetry in your home, including wooden entertainments centers and bookshelves. Painting your cabinets gives you the freedom to choose exactly how you want your cabinets to look. Do you want them modernized, using various colors, or do you want something more traditional and calm? Or do you love the way you cabinets already look and simply want to rejuvenate them back into their original condition? It's all up to you!

  • Get an idea of what you want your end result to be? What style, what color? Homeowner magazines can assist with this process, or maybe you already know. Whatever the case, make sure you have a clear vision.

  • Research various techniques. Look through how-to books, manuals, magazines, etc. to learn exactly how to perform various painting techniques.

  • Clean the area entirely! Remove any residues that could possibly have made a home on the wood. And speaking of chemicals, make sure that you are properly protecting your eyes with goggles or glasses. Also, it is best to wear a surgical mask to prevent excessive inhalation of paints and finishes used.

  • Keep in mind that refinishing you cabinets could take some time. During this process, you may want to make sure you have a secondary bathroom or kitchen to use.

  • Make sure you have any required materials before you start the project.

  • Remove any handles and hinges off of the cabinets. You may also wish to take the doors of the cabinets off so that sanding them is easier to do.

Please remember that patience is a virtue. This project takes time and precision to be done correctly. DO NOT RUSH your work. For more ideas, please see articles Choosing the Right Wood Stain and Wood Refinishing.
